Are you experiencing digestive problems, mood swings, lack of motivation, lower energy, reoccurring yeast infections, blotchy skin rashes, white-coated tongue (known as Thrush), or an increase in seasonal allergies? If any of these are presenting, the search for the root cause, may be an overgrowth of Candida.

Candida is a scientific name given to yeast, which is a form of fungus. 95% of the population, has some amount of Candida already present. A small amount naturally resides within all of us, mainly in our mouth and intestines, who’s purpose is to aid in digestion.

With medications, imbalanced diet, increased mental stress and environmental changes, your normal amount of Candida can become a Candida overgrowth.

The 4-step approach to get rid of Candida:

  1. Starve the Candida
  2. Kill the Candida
  3. Strengthen the digestive tract and immune system
  4. Balance yourself by making small changes to your lifestyle

Starving the Candida out of the body, involves stopping the growth of what is already present. The best way to accomplish this, is with an elimination diet and removing those foods that can increase it. Another great way to halt the growth of Candida, is to make your body more alkaline.

There are certain foods that can aid this, such as lemon, apple cider vinegar and cruciferous vegetables, but another great solution is drinking alkaline water. Nothing can live in an acidic environment. Candida and other pathologies (bacteria, viruses, parasites, etc.) only grow in an acidic environment.

Foods that increase Candida:

•Sugars (fruit, fruit juices, processed sugars, sodas, etc.)
•Refined carbohydrates (pastas, rice, breads, cereals, etc.)
•Foods that contain yeast
•Mushrooms (good for boosting the immune system, but they are fungi and can increase Candida)
•Fermented foods (good for increasing gut bacteria, but can increase Candida as well)

Now that you have removed any foods that can increase the Candida, it’s time to kill the Candida already present. This can be achieved by eating specific foods that have natural anti-fungal properties, as well as taking specific nutrition/herbs to help support the removal.

Foods that fight Candida:

•Coconut oil – contains a fatty acid known as caprylic acid, which acts as an anti-fungal and fights Candida.
•Garlic – contains allicin, which is a sulphur- containing compound, that acts as an anti-fungal. The best way to combat Candida, is to eat it raw.
•Spices: Cinnamon, ginger and cloves – all 3 have anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties to fight Candida.
•Apple cider vinegar – the only vinegar that won’t increase Candida. It has enzymes that help to break down the yeast.
•Olive, avocado, sunflower and walnut oils – all contain polyphenols, which are antioxidant and fight Candida.
•Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, brussel sprouts, arugula, cabbage, etc) – contain sulphur and nitrogen compounds that combat Candida.
•Lemon (lemon juice and essential oil) – lemons are acidic in nature, but become alkaline in the body. They help to detoxify the liver and contains some anti-fungal properties to help combat Candida.
•Alkaline water – the more alkaline your body is, the less yeast and fungus that can grow in it. (The best alkaline machine out on the market, is the Kangen water medical device.)

Nutrition that fights Candida:

•Caprylic acid

In the event that anti-fungal foods and nutrition doesn’t seem to get rid of the Candida, an anti-fungal medication may be needed. Depending on the overgrowth of Candida, dosage, amount and length of time can be determined by the medical doctor prescribing the medication.

Anti-fungal medications:

The easiest way to find out if you have Candida, are by the symptoms that present. Other avenues can include Biofeedback computer screen testing (Zyto and Biomeridian) and Kinesiological muscle testing. A more diagnostic route would be a stool test.

The amount of time and number of days involved with an elimination diet, cleanse, taking nutrition and medication all vary, depending on overgrowth and healer/practitioner involved in your treatment.

When the Candida and it’s corresponding symptoms go away, the next step is to strengthen the digestive tract and boost the immune system. These should be done by introducing good bacteria to the gut, in the form of probiotics.

75% of the immune system is found in the digestive tract, so it’s safe to say, that if you strengthen the digestive tract, you strengthen the immune system.

It’s important to reflect on what brought you to this point in your life and possibly make some small lifestyle changes, that will be more in alignment with the health you want to have. Whether needing to be more mindful of your diet, lower stress, get more restful sleep and/or get your structure aligned, so your body functions more optimally, making healthier lifestyle choices will keep your mind, body and spirit healthy and balanced.

I have personally treated many patients presenting with Candida and it’s symptoms. My two best tools to heal from Candida, along with the above information, are my ALCHEMY Cleanse, which is a 10-day metabolic detox that will clean your body out, down to the cellular level, and the Kangen life altering medical water device, which makes alkaline and antioxidant water, both important in starving and killing Candida.
